Family Shields and Crests

Family Shields and Crests
Often when we think of shields, we imagine objects
designed to protect warriors in great clashes on the battlefield.

This is exactly the type of shield which appears as the focal point on coats of arms
or individually as its own heraldic emblem.

However, on such arms, the shields are highly stylised and
decorated with symbols specific to the family or institution
to which the shield belongs.

Thus they are a unique symbol in shape, colour, decoration and meaning.

Family shields can have a variety of shapes, some that we would consider conventional and others
that are more ornate. Some shields are angled and others straight up and down.

It is believed that the shape of family shields were determined
by the time period and geographic region in which they were created.

The term family shield is often used to refer to a coat of arms, rather than a part of it.
The decorated shield can stand on its own, but is generally a part of a family crest or coat of arms.
Each family shield has its own combination of colour and symbols unique to your family or clan.
You must analyse all aspects of a family shield:
its shape, angle, colour and symbols, in order to comprehend its significance.

Family Crests
A family crest is another component of a coat of arms which sits above the shield, separated from it by the coronet,
helm and torse. The family crest on its own consists of the crest, shield and motto and is a historical emblem
originally used by Scottish clans as heraldic badges. Objects borne as family crests are often those pictured on
the shield, the most prominent piece of a coat of arms.

Family Heraldic Emblems Celebrate Ancestral Pride
Both family shields and crests are inherited objects, passed down through bloodlines.
They do not belong to those with the same surname, but with the same progenitor.
You can find your family shield and crest with the help of family history scrolls.
You can then share your ancestral pride, family history and heritage by adorning yourself with these
heraldic family emblems in the form of family crest rings, family seal rings and family coats of arms.

A Coat of Arms is sometimes also called a Family Shield, Family Seal or Family Crest.
